Allergy Testing
An allergy is an abnormal immune response to commonly occurring substances. There are thousands of allergens, but some of the most common include:

House Dust Mites

Grass and Tree Pollens

Pet Hair or Skin Flakes

Fungal or Mould Spores

Food (particularly milk, eggs, wheat, soya, seafood, fruit and nuts)

Wasp and Bee Stings

Certain Medication, such as penicillin and aspirin

Latex

Household Chemicals
Skin prick testing is a simple test used to diagnose allergic responses.

The skin is pricked with a tiny amount of the suspected allergen to see if there is a reaction. If there is, the skin around the prick will very quickly become itchy, red and swollen. Skin prick testing should focus on the allergen implicated in the allergy. This Test can be carried out on all age groups, however younger children (under 6 years) may vary in how they tolerate the procedure. Thus, discussion with one of our doctors, prior to booking is advised.

Is there anything I need to do prior to the test?

All antihistamines should be stopped at least 72 hours prior to the test.

Topical steroids and oral steroids should not be used for 1 week prior to testing.

If you are feeling unwell on the day prior to the test or the day of the test it is advisable to reschedule.

Prior to testing please try not to use any creams on the forearm where the test will be performed.
